THE SOLAR ROTATION REPORT
ISSUED ROTATION DURING ROTATION 1944

The ROTATION REPORT is the newsletter of the ALPO Solar Section with the primary function of promulgating the observations of the Section members to the professional community as well as other observers. It's secondary purpose is to bind our community of amateur solar astronomers together with news notes and other solar information.

If you are a professional researcher and need the data listed here contact: Richard Hill, Lunar & Planetary Lab., University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721 or email me at rhill@lpl.arizona.edu There is no charge for use of the data, only the request that the Section be acknowledged as well as the individual observer. Of course contributions to help defray mailing costs are always welcome.

All individual observers are listed below the data list. This is done not only to give public recognition to these observers, but to aid the professional in attributing credit.

News Notes

Well I didn't think it would make it to the website before rotation 1944 started but I just barely did it. This RR took nearly three weeks to prepare. Part of that time was eaten up by my job (Ma rs observing runs at Steward Observatory's Catalina Station) but a lot of it was due to problems with submitt ed data. When Active Region Numbers, times, dates, or observer names are left off of data it means a lot of detective work for me which may or may not be successful. This all slows the process down tremendously. In some ca ses I was only able to get through a few images in a given night's work. Such work is why I have often said that be ing a Coordinator means never having to say your observing! During the holidays I will be preparing the next summary report for the Strollin g Astronomer (Journal of the A.L.P.O.). This will encompass yet another year's data bringing us up to being o nly about two and a half years behind the current date. One more such report by April or so and we may get caug ht up to where we reasonably stay. Since we typically get data that is anywhere from one day to six months ol d a lag time of about a year in the summary reports seems reasonable and will give all observers plenty of time to g et their observations in. We still need people for the White Light Flare Patrol. This kind of observing (s ee website for details) is best suited to those that have only a few hours on weekends or once or twice a month, to obs erve the sun. If you are interested in this please contact me at the email address below. Solar activity is a bit slack at present. Only a few naked eye groups have been seen in the last couple months. But this stasis will definitely not last. Be ready. Recent problems with the net at University of Arizona have caused postings to slow a bit but we are still getting digital data up in a day or two. So keep those images coming and we'll get them posted.
